I hope you all do well on your finals and have a great summer!
A few last notes on Femme for the semester:

Hopefully the fall carnival will ensue and FEMME can have a recruitment table.
We plan on handing out the 'plan b' safety packets to freshmen
We are interested in holding a pepper-spray safety course and giving out pepper-spray
We'd also like to change the movie that has been played about rape to freshmen to something more poingent
The position of V.P. is still open!

And congratulations to Stacey Delledonne and Amanda for their service last year though FEMME!!

The event went well, we gave out over 75 granola bars with the url for the blog, hello kitty valentines with heart-health facts on them, luna bars, and plenty of information. The wellness and fitness center had a booth with working hearts; they had carbondioxide breathalizer things, along with plenty of freebies.

The Dreaded "A" Word: ABORTION

ATTENTION:
THE MOVIE NIGHT WILL BE CANCELED

There is a legal policy about movies that Carlow is supposed to abide by, but they haven't all year. When they saw the posters for the film "If These Walls Could Talk" and it said the word 'abortion' on it, they decided to suddenly enforce this policy, most likely without ever having seen the movie. NOTE: The policy was NOT enforced until Femme wanted to show and UNBIASED film about abortion- and advertized just that. The mere usage of the word ABORTION is a problem at Carlow I guess. That is unless you want to send pro-life emails about the man pro-life masses at the Carlow chapel.

Call for acts! FEMME is sponsoring an open stage event and we want you to be a part of it! You or a group of you and your friends can do or perform anything you can think of - on stage! Singer, dancers, actors, musicians, comedians, poets, and artists-the
Antonion Theater stage is yours on

doors will open at 7:00. Deadlines for submissions is November 25th,

A person can be heard in many different ways; by
speaking, singing, writing, playing music, dancing,
creating art, and more-all of these are creative ways
in which people can express themselves. Around the
world, women are often silenced. There is pressure on
women to NOT SPEAK about their experiences, namely ill experiences
such as rape, domestic violence and abuse. We are here to have our
voices heard and to raise funds for the cause. Proceeds benefit
Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR).

Hey Girls- just a quick email update!

jess had a great idea to give the open stage nite event an actual
name, 'voice' to show that the event is to give a voice to women who
are often silenced. she can tell you more about that later.

partially because of this, the money is going to go to PAAR-
Pittsburgh Action Against Rape.

our advisor recently let me know that she is no longer available to
be our advisor due to schedule conflicts. because of this, the voice
event is now going to be focused more on just our campus. The
performers will be just from Carlow unless we have trouble filling up
the spots available, and outside schools are still welcome to attend.
Also, we are in the process of finding a new advisor, preferably a
full time faculty. Jess is going to talk to Katie Hogan, the director
(?) of womens studies at Carlow. If anyone has anyone else in mind,
please let jess or me know asap!

posters and sign-up forms will be available on MONDAY in fwh, with
the following info: date- December 8th, 7pm, doors at 6, mandatory
rehersal- December 5th 7pm

do we want to design pins to sell at the event? I think it's a good
idea but I don't know what to put on them. femme has a (I think 2")
button press, and my sister has a 1" button press.

heather fabry and the art association is going to maintain the
art-part of the lobby

what does everyone think of an E-Meeting, like via an aim
chatroom?? I was realizing that a lot of stuff that needs to be said
at a meeting could be said in text, and email is nice but a chatroom
is real-time. This way, we could have a meeting in the evening and
nobody would have to be inconvienced. femme meeting in your pajamas!
let me know what you think!!!!

we're going to do all we can for vagina monologues, but without an
advisor its going to be a bit tighter this year- we'll start
immediately as soon as the new semester starts and we'll just have to
be super prepared before that.

also, we're having a luncheon probably next week. no big thing,
just highly promoted pizza lunch so we can promote femme. if anyone
would like to write a brief (5min and under) speech about what
feminism is to them, or their experience with feminism, or why it is
important that would be AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL.

okay I guess that wasn't so quick but hey PLEASE email me back with
comments and questions!!! thanks so much, I'm really excited to be
working with all of you.

What to do for planning open stage night:

-tell other students and say that they are welcome to participate and come (small fee for non carlow students)

-reserve theater

-write a letter to Giant Eagle requesting donation

-create registration forms

-possible date: December, on a Thursday, from 7 - 10

We might hold a free pizza lunch to bring in new members!

update, october 20

the breast cancer awareness banner event is going to happen, we just don't know when yet. molly, our advisor, is settling the problems with reservations and permissions and we should know when soon.
the open stage event is also going to be occuring, probably at the end of november. a lot needs to be done for this, but it will cost next to no money to produce (yay!).
we have a new official email address: femme@carlow.edu. the other officers and myself will be using it to read and to send emails from now on.

after the email addresses from this year and last year are consolidated (thanks brianna!) there will be an official email going out requesting avalibility times from all members in order to hold meetings at the best time for everyone, so keep an eye out for that

if anyone is interested, i'd like to create a new officer position for advertising events. this would include making and posting flyers, and maintaining the two bulliten boards that will be set up soon. it'd be a pretty low-key position with lots of help from me, and would look great on resumes. if you're interested or want to know more, email us at femme@carlow.edu.
lastly, below are some rough-draft ideas for Events, Projects and Promotions

At every event have a sign-up sheet for email notifications about events, and membership forms to turn in to become an active member, preview of next event, and cards with the blog address (www.carlowfemme.blogspot.com)
Bulletin board in Grace 1^st floor, set up another board in FWH with pamphlets, info, and events
Movie Nights: having woman-oriented films, kregse theatre, sell refreshments
Open Stage Night: student preformed events, art in lobby, refreshment sales, donations, non-student admission fee
Poetry Night: readings of original works by students and famous ones, not necessarily women-oriented poems, but women author
T-Shirt Sales: ‘this is what a feminist looks like’, i have access to screen printing equipment and could make for a minimal cost, also empowering to make own items
Fundraiser Party:having a band or dj to attract people, selling tickets, themed! 80’s night
Femme-Zine:printed version of blog, include works
Anti-Walmartprotest, encourage boycott, raise awareness
Selling “Cunt: A revolution…” Fundraiser: additionally, Ingra Mussica can speak, large Oakland-wide event

Pink Balloons: fill tens of pink balloons with helium, and write on them facts about women and femme meeting times
Chalking: using the driveway to get out a message, either of meeting times or a shocking statistic, drawn in a graph or number of women theme
Large Banners: with information, shocking stats, graphs, pictures to promote awareness and advertise meetings
